By late May 2026, Thaco officially became the distributor of Jeep and Ram in Vietnam, replacing Jeep Vietnam Automobiles Company (JVA). As part of the Stellantis brand group alongside Peugeot, Jeep and Ram will be sold through Thaco's integrated showroom network.

The 2026 Jeep Wrangler comes in three versions priced from 2.999 billion to 3.499 billion dong — approximately 500 million dong lower than before. Ram 1500 saw a more significant price cut, dropping from an opening price above 5 billion dong down to 3.749 billion dong for the Rebel variant. The primary reason: the new Ram 1500 uses a 3.0L twin-turbocharged engine replacing the old 5.7L V8 engine, which helps reduce special consumption tax when imported into Vietnam.

Both vehicle lines continue to be imported completely from the United States, accompanied by a 5-year unlimited kilometer warranty and a 24/7 roadside assistance package for 3 years. Thaco stated it will continue to introduce the Jeep Cherokee and Grand Wagoneer — with the Grand Wagoneer being sold through an official distributor in Vietnam for the first time.

Reducing engine displacement is not a technical upgrade — it is a special consumption tax calculation that Thaco executes very skillfully.

Analysis

The Ram 1500 price reduction — from above 5 billion dong down to 3.749 billion dong — is not a commercial miracle but rather the result of very specific tax calculations. Vietnam taxes special consumption based on engine displacement, so switching from a 5.7L V8 to a 3.0L twin-turbocharged engine is a cost optimization move, not purely a technical upgrade. Thaco understands this mechanism better than any other distributor — they have applied the same approach to many European vehicle lines in the Stellantis portfolio.

However, the price reduction may not solve a fundamental issue for these two brands in Vietnam: the pickup truck and off-road vehicle market remains quite small. Dense urban infrastructure, lack of convenient off-road terrain accessibility, and vehicle culture leaning toward urban SUVs — all of these work against Ram and Jeep Wrangler.

Thaco is betting on a customer segment that appreciates distinctiveness and American brand symbolism, not mass-market buyers. This is a reasonable strategy but has clear growth limitations. The real challenge is whether Thaco will thoroughly address after-sales service and parts availability — historically the weak point of American vehicles in Vietnam.

Diaspora Impact

Vietnamese diaspora members sending remittances home monthly — particularly from large Vietnamese communities like Little Saigon in Southern California and Houston — often have relatives planning to purchase vehicles in Vietnam. With price reductions of over 1 billion dong for the Ram 1500, many families in Vietnam are reconsidering their purchase plans for 2026, which could potentially affect the volume of remittances sent home for major consumption purposes.

Additionally, groups of Vietnamese-origin real estate investors and entrepreneurs in Southern California — already familiar with Jeep and Ram brands in the U.S. — may be interested in purchasing vehicles through Thaco's official channel when returning to Vietnam to visit family or expand business operations, especially with the Grand Wagoneer appearing on the market as an official distributor offering for the first time.
