Washington Governor Bob Ferguson has issued a statewide emergency declaration and outdoor fire ban, applying to most yard waste burning, land clearing, weed burning, campfires, and uncontained burn piles that are not stored in safe containers such as fire rings. According to official notice from Seattle and King County authorities, the order is effective from August 1, 2026 to September 30, 2026. The reasons cited include prolonged drought, abnormal temperatures, strong winds, and record-breaking wildfire counts across the state.
This is the fourth consecutive statewide drought year that Washington has recorded, and according to the notice, more than 1,000 fires have burned approximately 425,000 acres of land in 2026, the highest level since 2021. Currently, 12 large fires are spreading across more than 200,000 acres. The ban does not apply to gas or liquid-fueled stoves or grills placed on non-flammable ground and at least 1.5 meters away from vegetation, does not apply to licensed agricultural burning activities, and does not prohibit campfires contained in fire rings or fire pits on private land or in parks. Consumer fireworks remain banned from sale and use outside of authorized displays, as per current regulations.
The situation is particularly severe in the eastern Washington region around Spokane: three fires merged into the "Spokane Complex Fire" have destroyed or damaged at least 600 structures as of the evening of August 2, 2026, forcing hundreds of people to evacuate, according to ABC News reporting.
Regarding enforcement, the emergency declaration allows Washington to access additional resources through the federal support system, while also permitting the mobilization of additional National Guard forces. Governor Ferguson has mobilized 110 National Guard personnel from July 31 to support firefighting efforts, in addition to 27 helicopter crew members activated earlier. The State Fire Department has also dispatched 13 special teams to fires in Okanogan and Stevens.
