TUCSON, Ariz. — Federal and local authorities are investigating the disappearance of an 84-year-old woman as a kidnapping after a ransom note demanding Bitcoin was sent to a news organization.
Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her Tucson home Saturday night. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed the case is being treated as a criminal investigation.
The FBI is reviewing a letter sent to the news outlet TMZ that claims Guthrie is "safe but scared" and aware of her captor's demands. TMZ’s Harvey Levin said the note specifically requests a payment in Bitcoin.
The letter also referenced a "floodlight" at Guthrie’s residence. Reporters at the scene subsequently found two broken floodlights in the woman's backyard.
The ransom note also mentioned an Apple Watch, according to Levin. The FBI has declined to provide further details, citing the need to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
Levin said he believes the individual who wrote the letter is located within the Tucson area.
