Suspect steals ambulance, rams Idaho Homeland Security office in suspected attack

MERIDIAN, Idaho – State and federal authorities are investigating an attempted arson after a suspect rammed a stolen ambulance into a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) office in Idaho late Wednesday.

The incident began shortly after 11 p.m. when an ambulance was stolen from St. Luke's West hospital. Meridian Police Chief Tracy Basterrechea said the suspect drove the vehicle to a nearby location to retrieve gasoline cans that had been previously hidden in some bushes.

The suspect then drove the ambulance directly into the North Portico building, which houses the DHS office. Investigators believe the individual poured accelerants inside and around the vehicle but fled the scene as authorities arrived before the liquid could be ignited.

Basterrechea characterized the incident as a serious criminal act. While the suspect has not been identified or apprehended, officials stated there is no evidence of an ongoing threat to the public.

The FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and DHS are collaborating with local police on the active investigation.
