Ohio man faces federal charges in murder of teen girl met through online game
COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 39-year-old Columbus man faces federal charges of sexual exploitation of a minor and interstate travel to engage in illegal sexual conduct, authorities announced Tuesday.
The charges against Tyler Thomas follow an investigation into the disappearance and death of 17-year-old Hailey Buzbee. Thomas was initially arrested in January after the teenager's dismembered remains were discovered in Wayne National Forest.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Thomas and Buzbee reportedly met online through a gaming platform.
A federal criminal complaint alleges that Thomas traveled from Columbus to Indiana during the overnight hours of Jan. 5 and Jan. 6 to pick up Buzbee. Prosecutors say he then brought her back to Ohio with the intent to produce child pornography.
If convicted, Thomas faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison for each count. The FBI issued a statement affirming its commitment to seeking justice for Buzbee and holding those involved in crimes against her accountable.
